ARTISTS STATEMENT
My core motivation is that ART CAN INSPIRE EMOTION and emotion inspires humanity and care of the beings and places of our surroundings.
It is critical that I utilize materials that support or enhance my conceptual ideas. I work with glass because it is very strong but simultaneously imparts a sense of fragility and light. These seemingly competing forces make glass captivating and also reflect the tensions of daily life. I would like viewers of my work to feel the contrasting, internal and external, forces contained within our surroundings. I want to celebrate awe-inspiring forms of nature and commiserate on the tragedies and triumphs of being human in a time when we cannot help but be increasingly cognizant of our impact on any environment.
I often use the form of a dress as a medium of self-portraiture. The dress offers a path for many of my sculptures to embody and communicate personal emotion while leaving room for viewers to attach their own meaning and imaginings. I am currently focused on casting glass in response to elements of memory and landscape, amplifying some of their qualities, and recombining disparate parts in a manner to exaggerate tension, balance, and fragility.
